Lasagna is different from a meal you think of with camping. We camp often and are looking for a variety, so I wanted to try it out.

This meal requires minimal prep, outside of browning the meat. Other Dutch oven meals with easy prep include Chicken & Veggies and Pizza.

  • Pasta sauce – 2 jars
  • Oven-ready lasagna noodles
  • Ricotta cheese
  • Italian seasoning
  • Shredded mozzarella or Italian cheese

How to Make Lasagna in a Dutch Oven

Yes, with most Dutch oven recipes, you start by preparing coals. I have an eight-quart cast iron Dutch oven, so I prepare 25+ charcoal briquettes.

Prepare the ground meat at home ahead of time, or we cook it in the Dutch oven over a campfire.

We browned our protein with chopped onion and sliced mushroom.

The only preparation needed for the pasta sauce is to open the jars. Since the pot gets wider as you layer, use less sauce on the bottom and more on the top.

It is essential to use oven-ready lasagna noodles in this recipe. They eliminate the need to boil the noodles before assembling, and the sauce’s liquid helps soften them.

Prepare the cheese filling by combining ricotta cheese with Italian seasoning. I mixed ours at home and brought it out in a plastic container.

Package shredded cheese is perfect for this recipe. Look for mozzarella or an Italian blend.

Now, it is time to assemble. Layer the lasagna in the following order:

  • Sauce
  • Noodles
  • Sauce
  • Meat mix
  • Ricotta mix
  • Shredded cheese
  • Sauce
  • Noodles
  • Sauce
  • Meat mixture
  • Ricotta
  • Shredded cheese
  • Parmesan cheese

Cover the Dutch oven, and place 17 coals on the lid. Place the entire pot over a circle of eight coals.

Dutch Oven Tip
The number of coals will vary by the size of your oven. See chart
Prepare extra briquettes to replace spots that get cold.

Bake the lasagna for 30 minutes, rotating the lid and pot a quarter turn in opposite directions every 10 minutes.

The lasagna is done when the cheese is melted and the noodles are cooked. Add 5-10 minutes longer if needed.

These simple ingredients elevate when cooked in a cast iron pot. Serve the pasta with a side of vegetables and baked bread.
