Food cooked in cast iron tastes better. It takes ordinary ingredients to extraordinary.
We love stacking Dutch ovens and cooking the main dish and dessert simultaneously.

Carbonated soda or sparkling water is key in this recipe as the carbon dioxide bubbles act as the leavening agent to make the cake rise.

How to Make Strawberry Cheesecake While Camping
I love dumping ingredients into a pot and getting something delicious. This is one of those recipes. The steps are:
- Light and prepare 25+ charcoal briquettes, which serve as the heat source for the Dutch oven.
- Line the Dutch oven. This makes for easy cleanup. Buy or make your own.
- Wash the strawberries. Cut off the stems and cut each in half.
- Put the berries in the bottom of your lined Dutch oven.
- Cut the cream cheese into small pieces and scatter on top of the fruit. Freezing the block ahead of time will cut down on mess.
- Sprinkle the cake mix evenly over the fruit and cream cheese.
- Slowly pour 12 oz of carbonated liquid on top, covering the cake mix.
- Cut the stick of butter into small pieces. Scatter the pieces on top of the cake mix.
- Place the lid on the Dutch oven.
- Make a small circle with eight pieces of charcoal. Put the oven over the circle.
- Place 17 coals on the lid of the pot.
- Bake the cake for 50-60 minutes, rotating the lid and the pot a ¼-turn in opposite directions every 15 minutes.
- Serve the cake warm. Optional: top with vanilla ice cream or whipped topping.
This recipe can be adapted by substituting strawberries with your favorite berries or cherries. A yellow cake mix can be used instead of strawberry-flavored.
