Surf City Family Campground Review

Enjoy Topsail Island Camping at Surf City Family Campground in North Carolina. Campsites are right next to the beach.

We recently returned from a family vacation in Surf City, North Carolina. While we were on the island, we checked out Surf City Family Campground (SCFC).

Surf City Family Campground

SCFC is a great place to camp on Topsail Island. Prices are quite reasonable given its proximity to the beach. Much more affordable than Myrtle Beach which is two hours down the coast.

Family Camping at the Beach

The draw of SCFC is the beach. The campground is sandwiched between the dunes of the beach and the intercoastal marsh, straddling Island Road (State Hwy 210), which is the main road on the island.

The sound side is all permanent seasonal sites and the ocean side is a mix of seasonal and nightly campers. There are 38 nightly turnover sites. The seasonal spots haven’t had any turnover in over 5 years.

This is a basic campground with hookups. Sites are very close together, but it is all about location, location, location!

Sites are level hard pack dirt with some grass. There is no shade.

The main building has an office, bathrooms, shower rooms, and a porch. The shower rooms were recently updated.

The office has a camp store selling snacks and just about anything you might have forgotten or need.

A large porch outside the office has several rocking chairs, which is a great place to chat with other guests. At SCFC, what happens on the porch stays on the porch.

Easy Beach Access

The campground has a wooden ramp to the beach. One half has stairs and the other a ramp. The ramp is steep but has ridges to prevent wheels from going backward.

An outdoor foot rinse and shower station next to the ramp assist with removing sand. There is an outdoor shower along the side of the main building too.
